NAME: Kogami Shinya
CANON: Psycho Pass
CANON POINT: At the end of Psycho Pass: Sinners of the System Case #3 (SS) - where Kogami agrees to go back home to Japan.
AGE: 33

PERSONALITY:
Kogami is complicated. He has been described as a wolf in canon: a solitary wild animal that might be leashed but is untamed.
Motivations:
Strong sense of justice, as well as the desire to protect and help people. It’s why he became a detective in the first place.
He was temporarily motivated by vengeance. He ended up deliberately leaving his friends and his job to hunt Makishima down and execute him in cold blood after he discovered Makishima was responsible for murdering Sasayama (his subordinate, friend and mentor-figure).
He loses his purpose in life after, before coming back around to his main motivation of helping others again. He lends his strength and expertise to a group of rebels who were fighting against the Sibyl-backed SEAUn government), protecting villagers in Tibet (and many unnamed others along the way). Later on, he also ‘adopts’ Tenzing in SS and teaches her self-defense and eventually comes to terms with his past.
Kogami carries a measure of guilt in him for killing Makishima. He knows it’s wrong, but if he had to do it again, he wouldn’t do it any differently.
Strengths
Perceptive, astute, intelligent: Kogami’s profiling and deduction abilities are pretty much always spot-on, as can be proven by many instances in canon. He accurately profiled Makishima even when people didn’t believe he existed and pinpointed his motivations, immediately zeroed in on Yuji Kanehara in the Drone Machine Case, etc. On many other occasions, he can accurately predict people’s motivations, thoughts and feelings without having being told.
Stoic, level-headed: When he and Yuki were trapped in that labyrinth game devised by Senguji Toyohisa, it was Kogami’s level-headed strategies and quick-thinking that enabled him to survive being hunted by him. During investigations, Kogami often tends to observe calmly before he decides to act.
But Kogami can also be emotional. his single-minded pursuit of Makishima is a result of vengeance; he loses his cool when he’s finds out that Sibyl won’t allow them to interrogate Makishima.
Unwittingly charismatic: Because of Kogami’s quiet, steady strength and self-assured nature, and because he carries himself with a quiet strength and has such strong principles i.e. his quest for a better world, protecting others, helping others, as well as his expertise, people find themselves drawn to Kogami like gravity. Tsunemori said that he has the ability to draw people to him like gravity and asked if he was their spiritual leader instead of their tactical advisor. Kogami thinks it’s a pain in the ass -- he would rather they not put him on a pedestal.
Resilient, survivor: Kogami has seen one hell of a lot of depraved, awful, terrible things in his line of work as both an Inspector and Enforcer, and eventually as a rebel fighter and mercenary, not only is he generally unfazed when it comes to horrible shit, he still continues to help people.
Has strong principles, but is also realistic and cynical: while Kogami believes that being a detective is about protecting people, he took the law into his own hands re: Makishima when the law failed. He has also mentioned that being a detective is also a rigged game — you lose before you even start, and the best thing to hope for is a draw. Even so, he believes that people who are idealistic and kind are also what the world needs.
Honourable: Kogami repays his debts. He saved a village from bandits for free because that village took him in.
Relationships:
He makes friends easily, despite his stoicism. Kogami is generally accepting of people and appreciates their strengths. He lets them be who they are, not who he expects them to be. He’s also protective of them; he wanted to stop Tsunemori from undergoing the traumatic memory scoop. During the events in SS, when Tenzing was seriously wounded, and set out to pretty much kill the man who hurt her. As such, he’s formed solid relationships with his teammates, who all care deeply about him.
Kogami’s motto is ‘Be gentle with others, and strict with yourself’. Despite his jerk-like, blunt exterior, he means well, and tends towards compassion and kindness. This shows in the way he treats people he cares for, and others who are weaker than him. He is patient with people: Kogami easily forgives Gino whenever he lashes out at him / doubts him, looks out for Masaoka and Kagari, and encourages Tsunemori. He stood up for Yuji Kanehara when he witnessed him being bullied. In another instance, after using Yuki as bait, he apologised and told her to get her Psycho Pass treated, as she has seen things she shouldn’t have. Another example: Even when grievously wounded, Kogami still reaches out to a grieving Tsunemori when Yuki was killed in front of her. In SS, Kogami spares the life of a child fighter, who turned around to almost kill him. Additionally, Kogami makes no excuses for himself or his shortcomings. He admits when he’s wrong or when he’s messed up.
He still carries the guilt of killing Makishima, which was hinted at in SS, when he said that the sins you carry get heavier with time. And that you will never be the same again after you murder someone.
Flaws:
Relentless: nothing will stop him from doing what he feels is right. Kogami takes this to extremes, because he will give up/do absolutely anything to achieve his goals. Example: killing Makishima even though he knows it’s wrong. He won’t be able to live with himself otherwise.
Likes violence - he gets excited when fighting criminals and can be ruthless and vicious. Tsunemori once compared him to a carnivore that's cornered its prey. Kogami will do anything to take his opponent down.
Reckless, has wild tendencies, takes dangerous risks. When he was pursuing a criminal (who turned out to be a cyborg) who jumped off a highrise building. Kogami leapt off after him without a second thought. Another example: Kogami deliberately provoking the Yuji Kaneharainto chasing after him and Tsunemori despite being unarmed.
POWERS/ABILITIES: No special powers; Kogami is a person in peak physical health and has the incredible ability to take one hell of a beating and go back for more.
Excellent hand to hand fighter and marksman, and an incredibly brilliant investigator/detective. He is also more than capable of holding his own against heavily augmented cyborg mercenaries in hand-to-hand combat.
Tactical genius: He accurately predicted the SEAUn government’s movements in regards to wiping out the rebels, and devised a plan to destroy almost the entire technologically-superior fleet with their own outdated weapons, using the layout of the abandoned city. It worked. He also single-handedly sniped down 3 helicopters.
Fighting styles he excels in: silat, kickboxing, wrestling.
